A Business Plan – the greatest gift you can give yourself
Well, that time of the year has come and gone once again… if you’re anything like us, you’re probably extremely full from Christmas lunch and too much pudding. Most people look forward to this time of the year because they get an opportunity to slow down, enjoy time with their family and loved ones and eat way too much food (we’re happy to admit guilt on this one). Christmas is also that time when we’re used to giving and receiving gifts.
Take it from us: as a business owner, the greatest gift you can give yourself is a Business Plan. As you’re probably aware, the first thing our Shockwave team does with new clients is to sit down with them for a no-obligation, free meeting. In this first discovery session, nine times out of ten, we’ll sit with business owners who confess that they don’t have a strategy and haven’t even contemplated writing a Business Plan. Alternatively, clients may have a dated Business Plan or one that they don’t actually lose (trust us, we’ve seen this before too).
Without a Business Plan, everything you do becomes reactionary. Not to mention, you don’t have a firm handle on your financial situation, your marketing activities, your competitors, the potential for growth and so on. If you ask us, there are nine key areas of business. They include:
- Strategic planning
- Work/life balance
- Your team
- Systems and Productivity
In our experience, whenever one of these nine key areas isn’t operating as well as it needs to be, the results are immediately felt. Often, this presents itself in a loss of productivity or longer working hours.
Let’s backtrack a little. If you’re reading this blog, chances are, you’re interested in writing a Business Plan or at the very least, the idea of hearing the benefits of what a Business Plan can do for your business.
Now that we’re almost in January and at the start of a new year, you’re facing the grim reality of lower cash flow levels as everyone has been focused on Christmas and the New Year period. People are planning to go away (if they haven’t already) and their focus is elsewhere. What this creates for you, is an incredibly stressful period where you’re more worried about how your business is going to survive as opposed to taking a break. For so many business owners, the festive period can be toxic emotionally speaking.
In our world, you deserve to be planning a fantastic holiday or exciting getaway at this time of the year. Not worrying about how you’ll be spending extra money because of the holidays, fretting over paying off your credit card and your splurge on presents.
So what’s the best way to tackle this situation? First up, say this to yourself out aloud:
I deserve to live a fulfilling life where my business is thriving at all times of the year.
We might sound a little kooky with this suggestion but our own beliefs are incredibly important in terms of creating the life and business we deserve and love. You embarked on this journey as a business owner to change your world for the better, not to be stressed to the max because it’s Christmas or worried about where your next cash injection is going to come from.
The past is the past but in order for you to move forward, you need to create a Business Plan that acts as your roadmap to success in 2017. Let’s be honest here – if you Google the word ‘Business Plan’ right now, you’re going to gain access to a heap of templates that you can work with. If you can jump into these in a productive manner for you and your business, good for you!
